Philippines - Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD)

Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) was established in 1975 as a Government Owned and Controlled Corporation to supply water for the 4 cities and 4 towns in Metropolitan Cebu.

Currently they are providing safe water to 900.000 people, or 48% of the service area’s population. MCWD lacks the capital for significant expansions of its distribution systems, especially into poorer communities where risks are higher and return on investment small. Consequently, most urban poor are forced to buy expensive water from private sellers and / or dig their own wells, both of which have risks to health, hygiene and wealth.

The Sustainable Water Fund project with MCWD enables a pro-poor approach to MCWD’s network expansions by help funding the cost of new pipes and meter access points into low income areas. Thanks to this initiative,  all socio-economic communities can enjoy safe, sustainable and affordable water.
